Since the rivers flowed down and seasonally flooded this great valley, millions of waterfowl have come to the Grasslands to spend their winters. Merced County has long supported, and continues to support precious wetlands that provide habitat for many species of waterfowl as well as a great number of other unique forms of animal and plant life. When humans first came to live in this County, the pursuit of ducks and geese became an activity with a most fascinating history and legacy. A project has begun, in collaboration with the Merced County Historical Society, to address the "Waterfowl Heritage of Merced County". You can participate in this endeavor by your willingness to provide photographs and related items that chronicle the early days of duck hunting in Merced County. Treasured photos can easily be copied and returned. If you know of memorabilia such as decoys, guns, calls, clothing, art work, stamps, licenses, books or any items that represent this unique time and activity in our County, we would certainly like to hear from you. Any items used on loan will be under a specific loan agreement with the Merced County Historical Society, Your assistance in making this venture successful will be greatly appreciated.
